Hi!

My name is Lieke Kortmulder and this is my blog!
At the beginning of the assignment, I wanted Gertrude Käsebier's photo 'Menger'. I wanted to use this photograph because I had been wanting to use one of her pictures for a project for some time now. While I was making my illustration, I noticed that I was struggling to place the theme of the photo in a present-day perspective.
I decided, after trying many things, to choose an more old fashioned artwork and give a modern take on it.

I quickly thought of the painting 'The Sleeping Venus' by Giorgione. I saw this painting a year ago in Dresden and I still think about it often.

I think that the painting is beautiful but when I look at it, I feel a bit uncomfortable. If I was Venus, I would feel very unhappy. She is sleeping naked outside and there are all these strangers watching her without her realising. In my illustration, I picture how I would feel if I were in her situation. I would not be posing in front of the audience but I would rather be trying to make myself very small so that no one could see me.
